How can I update apps on my iPad since the initial ID I used in purchasing them is no longer available?

How can I update apps on my iPad since the initial ID I used in purchasing them is no longer available. The situation is, a friend used his ID to purchase a couple of apps for me a few years back but I am no longer in touch with him. I am currently using my own ID. When try to update the apps in question the request is made for password that relates to my friends ID. Any help. Thank you!
