MacBook Air and startup on external monitor

Before getting a MacBook Air, I had a MacBook Pro that was connected to an LG UltraFine display and I can open the laptop to boot (not logging in yet) and then using in a closed-clamshell mode and the login screen would appear on the LG display automatically. With the MacBook Air, I have the same connection but after booting the login screen doesn't display on the LG until AFTER I log in with my MacBook. Is there a setting that I'm missing?
