iTunes backup corrupt msg, nothing there to delete

Itunes is unable to create a new backup complaining about existing ones being corrupt. No backups exist (according to iTunes' dvc prefs), ergo nothing to delete. How does one re-init the whole backup mechanism? Or is Apple trying to push iCloud backup for revenue generation reasons these days...?
