Why don't all photos show up in my iCloud Photo Library?

Today I shot 83 photos with my iPhone 7. I expected to see all 83 photos on my MacBook Pro this evening so I could edit and share them. Funny thing, though: only 49 of the 83 show up on my MacBook Pro (and on my iPad).

I used my iPhone to share a few of the "missing" photos to a shared iCloud photo album. All the photos I shared with that album are visible on my MacBook Pro and my iPad, but they still do not appear in the Photos view. Can someone please explain why they don't appear ... ?

So far, I've tried shutting down my iPad and then restarting it, but that made no difference. I'll welcome any tips. Thanks!

Did the photos make it from the iPhone to iCloud? Are you seeing them in the Photos.app at www.icloud.com, when you sign in with your AppleID? Or did they not upload?

What does the status line show on your Mac? Is your Mac still uploading photos? It will not download new Photos until it has uploaded all photos. Check the status as described here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205409)

My iPad and iPhone both run iOS 12.1.4. My MacBook Pro: Mojave. I update all my devices promptly.

I’ve been using iCloud Photo Library since it became available. Here’s a screen shot from my iPad settings—

At this moment, I’m using 181.8 GB of my 200 available gigs. That seems to me to be adequate, but ... could that be the cause?

Which operating system is installed on your MacBook Pro?

And how are you syncing the devices? Are you using My Photo Stream or are you using iCloud Photos on your devices?

My Photo Stream does not transfer videos or Live Photos. You would need iCloud Photos to transfer the Live Photos and videos.

Shared albums do transfer Live Photos and videos, but using Shared albums to get your photos from the iPhone is not a god idea, because only downsized versions will be transferred. And the items you transfer with Shared albums will not appear in the Photos view until you import them from the shared album.

The storage needed by shared albums and My Photo Stream does not count against your cloud storage, but iCloud Photo Sharing does.

Hello again, everyone. We seem to have solved the problem. The missing photos have made their way onto my other devices. I think what did the trick was purging some bad pix from the library. I purged photos in late morning, but the magic didn’t start happening till after dinner tonight.

LACAllen: Your question about my iCloud storage led to the solution. I gotta remember this lesson ... . I tend to let all my photos—all 19,000–plus—just sit there. I need to do some housekeeping.

Thank you, Léonie, LACAllen, and tygb!
