Power point only projects in Presenter View

Looking for some help for an issue I have had for some time. I am using PPT on my Mac and when I try to project the issue on the screen it automatically projects it in presenter view on the screen. I am able to present the image as a slide show on my desktop but once I plug it into the projector, it converts it to presenter view while my computer screen still shows the slide show view. I have played with the mirror screen on and off and I have changed display settings in a trial and error attempt to stumble into the right answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!!!
