My original iPad Pro’s Apple Pencil used to charge via the iPad lightning port AND through a lightning cable via the adapter. Now it will only charge through the iPad. I’ve tried various cables and power plugs with no luck. What’s different? What has changed? I tried a litany of things, reboot, forget Bluetooth, etc. to no avail. Would welcome any thoughts.

Bit of a stretch, but make sure the adapter is correctly oriented.
The adapter although it looks the same on both sides, is actually deeper on one aide, and shallower on the other.
The deeper side is meant for the Pencil connector, while the shallower side is meant for the lightning cable connector.
The deeper side may not allow the lightning cable connector to correctly maker contact with the internal connections. Its happened to me a couple of times.
Outside of that, if you believe there's an issue with the pencil, follow rbrylawski's advice and have it checked out in an Apple Store.

I would hazard a guess the adapter you have is no longer working if the pencil still charges directly through the lightning port.
If you think there's an issue with the pencil, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar. This is virtually impossible for us to diagnose here.

I've seen this response before, but I’m not sold. See, I’ve been using a powered stand for my Pencil and it would charge there just fine. So, the lack of charging variables is not limited to the supplied adapter.
