What do I do if Safari won't open at all?

The other day, my Safari icon bounced up and down. I ignored it because I am a grad student with a deadline, and I've been infected by malware twice in a few months now. I went to try yet again to get the malware off - I am not a techie, btw - and clicking on the icon is now useless, it does not respond at all. Any ideas? Thank you!

Download and run the free version of Malwarebytes. It was developed by one of the long time and highly respected contributors to these forums.

Also download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply.

Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by another of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Also assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

A few questions, if I may:

  1. How do you know that you were infected with malware?
  2. Were there specific symptoms?
  3. How did you try to remove the malware?
  4. Were you able to identify the malware?
  5. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if the same symptoms persist?

To boot into Safe Mode, do the following:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Reboot your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo on your screen.
  3. Bear in mind that booting in Safe Mode is a bit slow.
  4. Try running Safari in Safe Mode and see if the same problem persists.

You should also boot your Mac in Recovery Mode and run Disk Utility to see if it discovers and fixes anything.

If the problem persists, you may also want to zap your PRAM, so that your system is restored to its default settings. If you need help with this, let me know, and I will be happy to assist you.

Finally, you may want to reset the SMC. Again, I can help you with this if you don't know how to do it.

If worse comes to worst, you may have to reinstall Mojave, either from a Time Machine backup, or from some other backup, or by going into Recovery Mode, unless you have the full 6 GB installer app on hand.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks.

Thank you. I am not capable of doing all of those things, and my computer is not capable of doing the first. I cannot shut it down - along with Safari being completely dead, Google Chrome will not close. I will try to make an appointment at the Apple Store again - I am a full time grad student and this situation is untenable. Thank you for generosity, knowledge, and help. p.s. I know I have Maftask, and my Firefox browser has Searchitnow. I removed Maftask a few months ago, but I cannot find it in any of the places I found it last time or where online forums tell me I can find it. Very disappointing I can't make an appt at Apple based on this issue. I do not know how to fix my car either but my dealer will fix my car issues for me...
