I am trying to export photos from Photos into a folder on a SanDisk for printing, but when I do the size is reduced way down, making them unsuitable for doing large prints. EG a 12MB photo is saved as a 1 MB. How do I export the photo and retain its size?

Photos has two ways of exporting:
For the first method you could try to set the JPEG Quality to "Maximum" instead of "High". When I al using "Quality > Maximum", the files will be much larger than for "High". For JPEG originals this may create a larger file size than before.
The "File > Export" menu is looking for me like this:
You could try to go directly for the keyboard shortcut instead of using the menu. Try ⌥⇧⌘E to bring up the "File > Export > Export unmodified original" dialog.

I tried your 2 suggestions. The first one worked ok exporting the photo with just a small reduction in size. However I couldn't get your second method to work, as I couldn't get the step from Export to Export ... Photos as an option. It went straight from Export to the next page where I was able to choose the size and quality etc, but the photo was only exported from a 5MB to a 1MB. As the Photos' edited versions of the pictures are much better than the originals, I would much prefer to use your second method. Any ideas?

I've done that and checked the size of the photos after exporting them and found that after exporting the edited photos went from 5 MB to only 1MB, which is not big enough for printing 12 x 16 inch sized photos.

In case it is unclear, do *not* drag and drop. You have no control over the size of the resulting image.
Your editing might have enabled better compression. They key is how well your image looks. Open the exported image in preview and check out the quality.
5MB refers to the file size, not the pixel size. You need to verify the actual number of pixels which is what counts for printing.
