I just bought the new iPad mini 5 but I'm holding off on a new case. The dimensions are identical but I'm not sure if everything else is still in the same place. I read there is a new sensor for the back camera and is the headphone jack still in the same place? I had a hard time finding any details or pictures to check.

The magnets in the old iPad Mini 4 smart cover do not line up with the magnets in the new 2019 iPad Mini 5.
And the magnets for the sleep/wake function are in different spots and the old iPad Mini 4 smart covers will NOT work.
You will need to purchase a new smart cover for the new 2019 iPad Mini 5.

It IS a smart case and it does fit. The only difference between the models where the case is concerned is where the mic is on the back. AND the magnets work just fine too 😜 Thanks for all the input.

At least the front part fits both models. Not sure about the back. OP is asking about a case (covers the back as well).
It is much better with the hard case for sure. The cover works just fine with the new iPad mini. Not sure about when I use FaceTime and need to use the mic so we’ll see. Magnets work fine too with the wake/sleep feature.

The iPad Mini 4 and new iPad Mini 5 share the EXACT same dimensions. EXACT.

I’m comparing the sketch with the mini 4 that I have in my hands and the only thing that MIGHT be off would be where the dual microphone is. On mine there is one by the camera lens and one just above the volume buttons. Their sketch is not clear where that second one is. But if you look on the page, I see a microphone hole in the middle back of the device, not by the camera lens.
This is of course, presuming that the models used for the photo shoot are what the production models look like.
Beyond that, yeah the dimensions are correct to the millimeter.
So it may come down to that microphone, do you need it, and where it is.
My money's on the case you have will likely fit just fine. Worst case is you try it, you don't like and you buy a newer case. From what I'm seeing on Amazon, no one is coming out with a new case for the iPad Mini 5. They're promoting their iPhone Mini 4 case as one fitting the Mini 5.

The only difference I can see is a smaller camera opening on the back. Like I said I'm not concerned about the magnets to hold it closed.
I'm pretty sure the case you have for iPad Mini 4 will work just fine with your new Mini 5.

The size/dimensions of the smart covers will be the same, obviously.
It is the placement of the magnets in both the iPad Mini 5 and in the respective smart covers that is the issue.
And almost all of smart covers made for iPads from third party sources mimic Apple's covers nearly exactly.
The magnets in the old iPad Mini 4 smart cover may not be in the same exact locations, any longer.
Actually, it was meant to refer to MichelPM. I didn't mean to copy that response to the OP. And we've now learned the OP doesn't have Apple Smart Cover and I remain convinced the case already owned will likely work just fine.

I'm more concerned about the camera sensor on the back of the ipad mini and if it will still line up with the camera opening and if the headphone jack, wake/sleep button is still in the same place.
