will the ipad mini 4 case work on the ipad mini 5

I just bought the new iPad mini 5 but I'm holding off on a new case. The dimensions are identical but I'm not sure if everything else is still in the same place. I read there is a new sensor for the back camera and is the headphone jack still in the same place? I had a hard time finding any details or pictures to check.

Someone tried this in a YouTube video.
The magnets in the old iPad Mini 4 smart cover do not line up with the magnets in the new 2019 iPad Mini 5.
And the magnets for the sleep/wake function are in different spots and the old iPad Mini 4 smart covers will NOT work.

You will need to purchase a new smart cover for the new 2019 iPad Mini 5.

Sorry.

I'm not sure whatever YouTube video you watch is trustworthy. Take a look at this cover:

Compatibility

iPad Models

  • iPad mini (5th Generation)
  • iPad mini 4

At least the front part fits both models. Not sure about the back. OP is asking about a case (covers the back as well).

I’m comparing the sketch with the mini 4 that I have in my hands and the only thing that MIGHT be off would be where the dual microphone is. On mine there is one by the camera lens and one just above the volume buttons. Their sketch is not clear where that second one is. But if you look on the page, I see a microphone hole in the middle back of the device, not by the camera lens.

This is of course, presuming that the models used for the photo shoot are what the production models look like.

Beyond that, yeah the dimensions are correct to the millimeter.

So it may come down to that microphone, do you need it, and where it is.

I do have an aftermarket case and I really like it.

This is what I have now:

VS what the new version:

The only difference I can see is a smaller camera opening on the back. Like I said I'm not concerned about the magnets to hold it closed.

Thanks but I can't watch YouTube video at work. Anyway, Apple wouldn't sell a cover and claim it is compatible with Mini 4 and 5 if it isn't, right? Are you saying Apple is wrong? Between the 2 (some users at YouTube) and Apple, I'd trust Apple more but I can't rule out that they make a mistake in the Compatibility description.

Folks,

Think peoples.

The size/dimensions of the smart covers will be the same, obviously.

It is the placement of the magnets in both the iPad Mini 5 and in the respective smart covers that is the issue.

And almost all of smart covers made for iPads from third party sources mimic Apple's covers nearly exactly.

The magnets in the old iPad Mini 4 smart cover may not be in the same exact locations, any longer.

MichelPM, I have thought. It's you who doesn't seem to be getting this. If the OP had a case that is like an Apple Smart Cover, magnets would matter. The OP does NOT have a Smart Cover type case. So the magnets mean absolutely NOTHING in the OP's situation. It looks like a folio case when closed. But when you open it and put the iPad in it, it's a standard hard shell case type.

You need to click on the link the OP provided for the case he/she has and look at how one attaches the iPad to it. Then you'll understand why magnets are not a factor in this situation.

This should help you:

See, no need to worry about magnets on the back of the iPad.

I understand it's a Smart Case in that the cover when opened wakes the iPad and when closed closes the screen. What's been the subject of discussion between us regulars is your iPad doesn't attach via magnets to the back. The Apple Smart Covers attach via magnets on the back of the iPad, whereas with your case, the iPad fits into a plastic hard shell case. I MUCH prefer the hard shell case for the back. It's WAY more secure.
