Can't add Google account since iOS 12.2

Hello everyone. Within the last couple of days I have upgraded my iPhone XS to iOS 12.2. Since then one of my Google accounts would not connect at all. I tried deleting the account to re-add it and it goes into this loop of not being able to add it.

Steps I've taken to add the account:

  • Select Google from the accounts
  • Drop in my username and password as it prompts you to do.
  • Put in the 2-step authentication code as I have 2-step verify setup.

After this is done, the OS will just bring me back to the list of accounts that you can select from. Essentially nothing happens.

Other things to note:

  • I've tried restarting the phone and tying it again. No dice.
  • I tried on Wifi and on LTE only. No change.
  • I even tried to add the account on a different iPhone that has been recently upgraded to iOS 12.2. Same result.
    • I think this is telling as this is on a completely different iPhone with a different iCloud account. So it appears that it's happening on multiple devices regarding of account. We are both on iOS 12.2.

If anyone has a similar issue or can provide a fix, I'm all ears.

Thank you.

iPhone XS, iOS 12

You got it wrong again. Google two step verification will work but slight differently....

Signing in to your account will work a little differently (As per Google)

1 You'll enter your password. Whenever you sign in to Google, you'll enter your password as usual.

2 You'll be asked for something else. Then, a code will be sent to your phone via text, voice call, or our mobile app. Or, if you have a Security Key, you can insert it into your computer’s USB port.

Each time when you login, you will have to provide the code which will be sent to your phone, voice, Key etc...

How will the account added in iPhone will get the code?

Solution: Here comes Application specific password. Your pwd remains intact unaltered, unchanged but applications (apps) will require a new pwd generated for Apple (iOS/macOS) by Google.....

This link below will provide guidance to you to generate app specific password for your account, which you need to use for iPhone, iPad, Mac etc..

I am just going by what is being said in your post.

  • "Since then one of my Google accounts would not connect at all." - You attributed this behaviour with iOS and not checking on Google itself; says a lot.
  • It is very clear what you are trying to drive at.

I have three devices running on iOS 12.2. None of them have any issue on any account including gmail

So you provide no resolution to your claim other than yours works.

Let me be more clear, then - as you are clearly assuming and trying to state I have some motive. My motive is to have this fixed as it was working before the 12.2 update! This is a problem with GSuite and iOS ability to authentic. I would also like to state that this ONLY started when upgrading to iOS 12.2.

I would further note that the new macOS is experiencing the same issues and there are forums and chats that are going on with this as it was discovered in the betas but released anyway. I'm glad yours works! It appears you don't use G-Suite for a business. Hence this will not affect you.

This has nothing to do with 2-Step verification being on or off. And it appears this issue has been fixed! It was a problem on the Google side that they just addressed and fixed. You are now able to add the account with no issues. Works perfectly. Also note the problem was with the G-Suite with customs domains and not regular gmail accounts.
