frequent BSOD appleaudio.sys new Macbook pro

I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2.6GHz, i7/32GB/2TB SSD/Vega 20 4GB. When working under win10, I have had 8 BSOD within the last week pointing to AppleAudio.sys

I had a look at the driver and I guess I will not find or get an updated version, since the system has just been setup, everything should be up to date. Searching here in the forum and online has not yielded any similar problems, which is a bit strange. I have already reinstalled the bootcamp drivers, which didn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

I think I found another issue that can cause blue screens, but luckily I managed to circumvent this one as well ( I haven't checked if there is a discussion about issue number 2 here in the forum) . Either way, I haven't had a blue screen for several weeks now. This is what works for me:

  1. Keep the "Apple Audio Device" deactivated, which unfortunately means no sound and is not really a long term solution.
  2. Check the version of your "Broadcom 802.11ac network adapter". For me the version 100.10.330.6 works fine without blue screens. Some time in March or beginning of April there came an update via Win 10 though, that brought the version to 100.10.459.0. After this update I started having blue screens again (after I had just gotten rid of them for a while) though a different typ of blue screen. If you have version 100.10.459.0 I suggest you test rolling back on the previous version by doing the following as an admin: device manager>network adapter>Broadcom 802.11ac network adapter>properties>driver tab>roll back driver (third button from the bottom).

I hope this helps. Let me know if this leasds to any improvements.

You are right, now paying more attention to this, I also had at least 2 or 3 unexpected shut downs after waking the screen from sleep. The touchbar lights up, the screen stays black and after a bit of waiting the system automatically reboots.

I'm now in touch with apple support, let's see if they can help.

Many thanks for your feedback Loner T.!

While waiting for the Apple support to get back to me I have now started to do my own testing. I have started by deactivating the "Apple Audio Device" in the device manager to be able to isolate the issue. In a bit more than 24 hours, so far no more BSOD's - let's hope it stays like this.

If this holds true, the issue could truly be with the Apple Audio driver, just like Windows 10 suggests.

Nice.

The Apple T2's introduction has caused a lot of grief for Windows-on-Mac users. It would be good to get to the bottom of this.

I guess just rolling back the network adapter will only remove some blue screens. Generally I would say most of mine were caused by the "Apple Audio Device". You should definitely try both in combination. Depending on how many BSODs you have, you should know after 1 or 2 days if it works or not.

If you can isolate the problem the same way I could, and make it go away by disabling the "Apple Audio Device", it will be much easier to discuss this with Apple.

I get this most frequently with Chrome playing video in the background. I can often prevent the crash if I detect that audio isn't working, closing the browser, enter device manager, uninstall the AppleAudio.sys and then scan for hardware changes to re-activate the driver. It doesn't always work.

AND IT'S A HORRIBLE WORKAROUND

It is very possible to corrupt the nvme due to a BSOD, and this driver has been a mess since I purchased the laptop.

One other thing that I notice frequently is little crackles in audio when playing back, and I think this may have something to do with the failure. Crackles are usually caused by buffer under-runs. I know that apple just fixed a latency issue in macOS, I wonder if the Windows driver suffers the same issue.

Sadly this is one hardware component produced by apple, so there's no searching for a driver alternative.

Did you recently do the Win 10 update? Which version number of win 10 are you running? Can you please check the version number of the Broadcom 802.11ac network adapter driver ? What are the specs of you computer, especially the the graphics card?

I suspect it might be above 100.10.330.6. If it is above and you have a system similar to MacBook Pro 2018 i9 32GB 2TB SSD Radeon Pro Vega 20 than in my experience it might be the wireless driver. In this case it can probably be fixed by either just a driver rollback of the Broadcom 802.11ac network adapter driver to version 100.10.330.6. or a windows version rollback (depending on the windows version).

These are two different issues! The latest Broadcom driver gives a BSOD, but the Apple audio dritter as well. The Broadcom Crash can be easily fixed by rolling back to initial BootCamp driver set. However BSOD by Apple audio driver still exists!

I filed a Bug Report at Apple, but didn’t receive any reply from them - VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!

Yes I did do the Windows 10 update though the issues were occurring prior to that. I also did roll back the wireless Driver a couple months ago and that appeared to solve those issues temporarily. However, it is now happening AGAIN nearly every day. You are correct in your assumptions about my Macbook model. My graphics card is the Radeon 560x. Also, I was mistaken, the error code was 0x00000082d, but still, no documentation I can find on it. The poor support for boot camp is starting to become a liability for me.

(Edit)

After some further digging I actually do think it is the network driver causing the issue still. For some reason, it updated the driver automatically, and will no longer allow me to roll it back.

Jun 14, 2019 1:23 AM in response to NIMRODofArnor

Yes, if you updated windows, your wireless driver was automatically updated to the latest version. This is why I asked about the windows version and updating. I guess the your problem is solved, even if it was not the appleaudio.sys in this case.

Note: Simple rollback of the wireless driver is not possible. Either you manually install the original botcamp driver or you restore your previous windows version. I ran into some other unrelated issues as well, so I went back to Windows version 1809.

I'm aware that these are 2 different issues, but didn't mind helping someone to solve an issue.

I agree with the Apple audio driver situation, I haven't heard from them in month either. The support seems to be extremely poor. Are you running the latest windows build? It would be interesting to see if the new windows version improved anything with the appleaudio.sys crashes, although the chances are extremely slim.

Jun 14, 2019 12:35 PM in response to NIMRODofArnor

I'm also running Win 10 Pro version 1809.

NIMRODofArnor, if you are on the new 1903 Windows version and have no need to go back to 1809, it would be cool if you could try to manually install the original Bootcamp Broadcom 802.11ac network adapter driver version 100.10.330.6. again (to fix the blue screen 0x00000082d) and then activate the apple audio device for a bit to see if the new 1903 windows version maybe makes a difference. I'm aware that the chances are very slim, but it might be worth testing.

If you do try it, please let us know if the appleaudio.sys BSODs continue on Windows 1903.
