dmg password lost

I have searched and searched this topic ... I can't find my password for a .dmg file. I know I used some combination of passwords I use, just not exactly what.

I see post recommend using a password cracking software, but they don't say which one and many of the post are very old. I need something that I can put in my possible password phrases and have it try various combination. Free would be a plus. Any recommendations? Much appreciated.

My first thought is this will not be easy, I don’t believe Apple would create a system that if memory fails would be quick to circumvent!

Saying that this post talks about similar and the OP did eventually remember, took 100 guesses though.

Software speeds up the process by employing a data base of passwords (Dictionary) that are tried in turn, obviously for success yours has to be one of them (at least I believe that’s how it works), this site talks about a few of them.

I’m not sure about “safety” implications and some do appear “old” and might not be compatible with latest OS, so you would be advised to check them out prior to downloading but this one is Open Source so might have promise.

Not sure what else to add, best of luck.
