Copying process stalled when it should be over...

I'm copying 1TB from one hard drive to another (all external). Everything went smooth, except for now... Everything has been copied: Copying 0 items to "HD"

The weight/time detail shows: 1.06 TB of 1.06 TB - About 5 seconds

It's been stuck at 5 seconds for many minutes now (if not hours).

What can I do about this other than restarting the whole process?

iMac 27", macOS 10.14

I don't think you need to start the whole process over again. I would try cancelling the process, and if that doesn't work just shut the Mac down and restart it. Because you are copying from one location to another the original files will be fine. When restarted open the location you were copying to and see if any files failed to complete. If you find any incomplete or missing files then just copy them back over rather than the whole lot. It is sometimes better and less taxing on the Mac to copy files over in smaller batches to prevent happenings like this.

After some time, Finder warned that not enough space to complete operation. Yes, I partitioned the disk a bit tight, but it should've been enough...

Anyway, so now I look at the transfer, and some files actually copied all right (9 out of 250). Many are missing... Finder and Disk utility informs there are only 40mb free.

I cannot copy files in smaller batches is because it's a time machine backup (Backups.backupdb). It only allows me to copy the whole folder (not what's in it).

So now I wonder... Find a way to copy the missing backup files in smaller batches into the parent backup folder that copied ok. Or begin anew, making sure I provide more storage space for the whole parent backup folder.
