Copying .mov file from one drive to another - freezing?

I'm just trying to drag and drop a .mov file from one drive to another. From my MacBook Pro Desktop to a Thunderblade RAID drive (USB-C).

I just did it with one clip. But it won't do it with a second clip. The .mov files are approx. 750 megs each. In a previous try it wouldn't do it with either clip. I had to shut down the laptop and reboot.

I just get the pop-up saying 'Estimating time remaining ..' and it seems like it's just frozen in that state.

Note: I originally moved the same two clips from an external palm-sized hard drive onto my laptop desktop in seconds. No issues.

I'm wondering what might be happening. I'm using a MacBook Pro 16" pre-silicon. And if I click 'stop' it just goes on indefinitely stopping, but not stopping. I can't even Force Quit the action.

I relaunch the Finder. I try to delete the greyed out clip ... of the uncompleted transfer ... and again I get a pop-up that is trying to move the uncompleted transfer to the Trash.

Ventura. I just installed Ventura last week. Never had this issue before.

Cher Tom,

Talked to OWC. The APFS formatting won't show big changes quickly; it takes a few days to sort itself out. I updated my SoftRAID app. The Thunderblade drives are fine, no issues. I'll just continue working. And wait till APFS sorts out what is and isn't on the drive.

I was able to copy over that 750 meg .mov file in less than a second. Duh. You were absolutely right, I'd just jammed too much on the Thunderblades and the SSD cache was struggling with the incoming file.

Everything is working hunky dory (though I'm not yet seeing the actual correct usage on the Thunderblades ... which is supposed to shake out over the next day or so).

I'll report back here if it turns out to be an issue. But I don't think it will.

Thanks for your help Tom..

Hey Tom. Both drives formatted APFS. One is an OWC Thunderblade RAID setup with 8 x 4TB SSD drives. Disk Utility seems to think there is no issue with either drive. After running the Disk Utility I tried to copy over the .mov file again ... nada ... it froze in the 'calculating' mode, so I click stopped it, and now it's frozen in the 'stopping' mode, but never stops. Grrr.

The OWC Thunderblade RAID drive has only 150 GB's of space left. The .mov file is 750 megs. I wonder if that could be the issue? Though it took the previous copy (750 megs) without a problem.

It's in my agenda to clear a project off the RAID setup which will free up 4TB of space. Maybe I'll just do that, and try the copy again. I'll report back.

This is interesting. The project I dumped from the RAID drive was 4 TB's. But now I look at the RAID drive and it only has 600 GB's free. Before the dump it had 150 GB's free.

The RAID isn't set up for redundancy. It was set up as a straight drive. And I do regular backups to another system. I look at Disk Utility. The Thunderblade is 30.72 TB's. That's 8 x 4 (3.84)TB's. See screenshots attached.

It says the drive is using 30.11 TB.

But if I check the project folder left on the drive, it says it's only using 16.55 TB.

Meaning if I do a Command 'I' from the folder it says 16.55 TB. And if I do it from the actual drive icon it says 30.72 TB.

The project I pulled off was more than 4 TB's. So something isn't making sense.

Perhaps I need to talk to a tech at OWC about the Thunderblade setup?
