Merging multiple Mp4 files without re-encoding.

How to merge two or more Mp4 files into single file. I tried using Quicktime. But, it merges into .mov file. I just want to merge without any quality loss. All of my files have same resolution, bitrate, etc. They are from a single video splitted into many. I want them in one. The videos are 1080p. I tried using iMovies too, but they to re-encoded the file while exporting. Is there any way. I don't want any paid app for this simple task.

I haven't tried to do what you want to do. Have you looked at Subler? If you are willing to use mkv which may be more amenable to concatenating files you could perhaps use mkvtoolnix.

Also realize that with many players if you give files the same names but sequential numbers at the end they may just automatically play several files with only a slight hesitation between segments.

I don't know of any way of merging Mp4 files without re-rendering them. When you share out an iMovie project with two or more videos in it the videos will be merged into one in the final product. However, sharing out creates a new file that requires encoding. If you share out with the Best Quality (pro res) setting that will give you a .mov file of higher quality than the Mp4, because of the pro res higher bitrate. The file size will be 4x larger, though.

You might check the bitrate of the QuickTime .mov file to see if it is higher than the Mp4 you started with.

In any event, I suspect that re-encoding an Mp4 to another Mp4 likely would not result in any quality loss visible to the naked eye. But that would be your call. You could duplicate the videos and re-encode the duplicates so that you keep your originals. Then you can compare them side by side for quality and specs. You might not notice any difference.
