Kernel Panic after upgrading to 10.14.4

I recently updated two 2013 Mac Pros to 10.14.4 and immediately they started having kernel panics after about five minutes. It even happens in recovery mode. I eventually swapped hard drives with another Mac Pro that hadn't been upgraded, and it seems to run stable there. The hard drive without 10.14.4 seems to be running fine in the machine that was panicking. Currently I've at least got one machine up and going, but it's frustrating. Anyone else ran into this problem?

The panic I'm getting can be seen at this Github gist. It seems to always be a different process, and sometimes the panic message is slightly different, but it always seems to be some form the NMIPI for Unresponsive Processor panic.

I have swapped my 64GBs of aftermarket RAM with the same amount of OEM Apple RAM borrowed from another Mac Pro. So far so good after 24 hours.

I have also upgraded to 10.4.6, but I am more inclined to believe that it is the OEM RAM that is making things more stable. It would make sense that Apple tests their OS with mostly stock hardware, and some odd bug fell through the cracks and is hitting systems with aftermarket RAM/SSD.

I will circle back if anything changes. By the way, the donor Mac Pro is currently running El Capitan with my original aftermarket RAM, no issues to report.

I don’t believe it has anything to do with heavy cpu usage - I watch it happen frequently when there are no applications open and I’m not using the machine.

I opened an engineering case a few days ago and referenced this thread. It actually crashed while I was on the phone with them so we have near perfect diagnostic information.

Keep posting information here, hopefully it can be worked out soon. Crash reports are awesome.

I wouldnt blame apple if just Genius bar give me run around, but I filed the report at Genius bar and my mac pro was sent to apple service center for diagnostic, my report was cleared on record as running smoothly before update to 10.14.4. Apple service center replied me back with unknown issue but want to charge me 1200 for the fix, I declined it and took it back home. Replaced the SSD and Logic board one by one for testing by myself then finally came out with conclusion. I mean I dont think I'm the only one and 1st one to report this issue, Genius bar doesnt have enough reports for it I understand but Apple service center gets all reports WW and still gave me run around and none exist charges, it's unacceptable. They should do better job for looking into their IOS issues and listen to users even small portion of it. Just my opinions.

Yea the spell checker i use changed it.... AWOL was what i meant to type. I was referring to the fact that the bluetooth devices just at random disconnected and went ape **** on me before going into kernel panic. I actually wrote a much better post regarding my problem however apple removed it not even a minute later. I have had one panic today. Prior to today they have been much more frequent like 9 times a day. Anyways hopefully your issues are no where near as problematic as mine.

Na no sign i gave up trying to deal with them. I even have a brand new macbook pro i got in 2017 and it happens to have to short of a ribbon that connects the display to the logic board and because its integrated into the display you cant change the ribbons they make you buy a new monitor so im not sure what i will do about that but two problems in one month with two separate macs was a very bad month for me

I am struggling to get a copy of the installer that is pre the versions with the problem. Tried a few things like restore from backup only to find it failed at like 90% done. Do'h. Anyway, I am wondering if you can share a copy of your installer file that is 10.14.3. Happy for you to contact me directly *** my website at interactivewebs com. Really appreciate a drop box link or something. OR. advise on how else I may be able to get it.

An update.

Still crashing with 10.14.5.

I am at the very extreme edge of patience here. The entire point of sinking several thousands of dollars into a computer is to never have to deal with issues precisely like this.

The system is unusable. Every time I think it might just be stable enough to get some work done, and I start working, boom it crashes again, and I've lost all the work I did for the last hour or so. This whole week has been utterly unproductive.

Apple, fix this. Immediately. It's entirely unacceptable to have your users deal with this. Let alone, the ones who are in the "pro" market segment.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

We make tools for these kinds of people.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Oh you see genius? BS. You see me as a sucker. A sucker that paid you thousands of dollars. A sucker who will keep giving you more and more money no matter what you do or don't do.

It is painfully clear that this is a scenario that Apple has not considered. Even if you reach senior support, they will not send you a link to download 10.14.3. If you don’t have a Time Machine backup or made your own 10.14.3 boot USB, you’re out of luck. You can go back to High Sierra. But since many of us need to be on Mojave, this is ridiculous. Very disappointed!

@nambrosch, this is not a rant. I am simply sharing what I found out about the problem so far. Tech support isn't able nor qualified to resolve a low-level software problem deep in the bowels of macOS, hence I am asking for people to report it via the proper feedback page to the engineers that are, rather than waste their tech support resources by complaining to the wrong people. As for Apple's support quality: any company faced with a pile of similar sounding reports concerning its top-of-the-line products should be actively investigating the issue rather than trying to have users debug their problem. All it takes is a MacPro6,1 and macOS 10.14.4, so it's really not that hard to do given the information provided here. I don't see any effort on their part so far and I really don't have time to set up two Macs to do kernel debugging for them - I already have a day job and 3 kids, thank you very much. :)

Jun 15, 2019 4:19 AM in response to Coldstream

Well Coldstream, that's great to hear. You might be right about the Boot ROM. As I mentioned before, after downgrading to 14.3, mine is still on 130.0.0.0.0. And unfortunately my Mac is still not stable. Because of the Boot ROM? Or did all the crashes damaged something else...? I could of course reformat my MP's SSD, but don't want to that if not really necessary. Is there anyone else out there still having issues after downgrading to 14.3? Would be nice to know.

Jun 15, 2019 5:48 AM in response to Werner from Belgium

HELP!

Yup, it happened again, my Mac crashed although I downgraded to 10.14.3.

Yesterday it was stable, than I had some freezes this morning and now it shut itself down and restarted.

I was briefly out for grabbing a coffee, wasn't even doing anything on the Mac.

Exactly the same behavior as under 14.5. The problem report starts with: 'NMIPI for spinlock acquisition timeout, bla bla bla...'

Could it be the Boot ROM that remained on 130.0.0.0.0, even after the downgrade?

Anyone else having the same problems again under 14.3?

Thanks guys

You can't blame people for being hesitant to upgrade. We lost days to this bug and I for one will wait until I hear more success stories before I waste any more time doing Apple's engineers' job.

@bomelkr just to be sure, can you confirm that the issue is fixed on your machine as well? You talk about other peoples' experiences, how about your own? "Somewhat stable" doesn't cut it for me, I need rock solid as I need this machine for my day job. Thanks!
