My Mac has become very slow and keeps prompting me to manage my storage as it is full. It says the system is using 955GB of the 1TB and won’t let me do anything to investigate as it just stays in a cycle of telling me storage is full.

That is dangerously low.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Have you emptied the Trash lately?
Safe mode just give a small bit of extra room to move or trash some bog items, shoot for at least 100GB of Free Space.
