IPad Pro not charging - is it fixed in new models?

I seem to be a victim of the iOS 11 and subsequent bug that results in my 10.5 inch iPad Pro not charging fully, randomly not charging at all while plugged in using the charger and cable that came with the iPad, and sometimes failing to charge at all. It is infuriating.

My 2017 iPad is less than 2 years old. I am reluctant to buy a newer one until I get some assurance that it will not suffer from the same defect. All responses, positive and negative, wanted!

iPad Pro, iOS 12

Don't believe that is in any way a wide spread defect, it may be an issue specifically on your iPad.

If it were even a little wide spread there would be tons of posts here about it, which is not the case.

The charging issues can be caused by different things. Most common is debris or lint in the charging port. This generally manifests as an inability to create a connection, or maintain one to the charger if it manages to connect. Simplest thing to do, is to use a plastic or wooden toothpick to carefully clean the inside of the port and remove any debris it may have.

Otherwise, its entirely possible your iPad is suffering from a battery problem. I would suggest taking it into an Apple store for diagnostic, and possible repair.

I took the iPad Pro in to the Apple store. Diagnostics were good. Charging port looked good.

Tech suggested it may be a software issue, and suggested a system restore. He suspected a glitch in a patch download. Entirely possible, as we were living in a construction zone last year, with frequent short outages. So far, so good, but it is intermittent so only time will tell.

You have nothing to loose by letting them check out the hardware. I have both a 12.9” (first gen) iPad Pro and a 10.5” iPad Pro and an iPad air2 and none of them have had any issues with charging - and thot covers iOS 8.1 through to the current iOS 12.2 as I always update when iOS offers an update.

I’ve not seen any wide spread reports of charging issues with any iPad Pro, that’s why I say it may be a hardware issue with your iPad. So worth checking at least.

The charging port is clean, I checked that. I did everything the Apple support answer for charging issues suggests. The problem is independent of cable, charger, and outlet. So the battery might be the issue. The sudden onset of problems coinciding with iOS 11, and the intermittent/random nature of it leads me to suspect a software issue.

Guess I will have to take it in.

Oh, yes, that was the first thing we did. We don't use any other chargers, and I only have a non-Apple lightning cable because I needed a very long one. It is regardless of charger, cable, outlet; it can happen even when plugged into the computer. At least it is happening far less often!

I will be getting a new iPad, as the Apple tech said the other possibility was bent port cables on the top where he cannot see, and the port can't be repaired.
