Time machine router speed

Why is the Interned speed through my Time Machine so slow? When I log into the network that goes through my Time MAchine router the speed is reduced by over half if not more. I used "Speed Check" to test the speed and the speed from the Time Machine was less than 10 and the speed when I attach to the Xfinity Modem was over 100. Any clues?

Ok.. let me suggest a few ways to measure things.

Check the lights on the Xfinity if it shows ethernet speed..

The airport utility on iOS device will also give you that speed.. I don't think you can get it out of the Mac version at all. (with some nasty hacking)

Just load the iOS version onto your iphone or iPad and tap the icon of the TC..look at the connection and it should tell you the link speed.

Another way would be to copy a large file to the TC hard disk.. in its current location.. via wireless.

Then turn off the wireless in the TC and copy the same file to the TC again via the Xfinity router. (that is passed via the ethernet link and you will quickly see the difference if any).

If it is clear the ethernet is slow.. then plug the TC into the Xfinity router with a short patch cord.. and turn off its wireless.

Do the test again.. if it now speeds up the cable is bad.

There are perhaps indications of speed of ethernet in the Xfinity router.

We need loads more info.

What model is your TIme Capsule (TC)? (FYI Time Machine is backup software on the computer not a router)

How are you connected to the TC? Wireless or Ethernet?

If you have been testing by wireless please use ethernet now to see if that fixes the issue.

If you are using wireless then we need details from the Mac about its connection speed to the wireless.. you can pick this up by clicking the wifi fan in the top menu.. while holding down the option key. Please give us the screenshot so we can see if that is the issue.

Has this problem just started?

Is it a new setup that has never worked or an old setup that was fine and has now failed?

Screenshots from airport utility of the actual setup of the TC helps no end.

Also info about the connection and operation of the TC in the network.

Whenever we see 10Mbit speed it sounds like a faulty ethernet cable.. did you replace the cable from TC to the main router?

Thanks for the information. I have been using my Time Machine as the Router and the Back up for my computer for a few years. This issue seems to have gotten worse after I moved it closer to my computer. The modem/router I have from Xfinity provides excellent speed through them so I am thinking it may be the cable from the modem to the Time Machine you suggested as a culprit. Both are connected to my computer via wireless.
