iCloud is a cloud based system. Cloud based computing uses massively redundant servers and storage to ensure data integrity and service continuity. Apple (and Google and IBM, and Microsoft, and Amazon, etc) have very large, industrial campuses basically filled with the hardware that is “the cloud” and they have those facilities in multiple parts of the world, all interconnected.

An estimated 35-40% of all cloud computing of any kind, world wide actually runs on Amazon Web Services cloud systems.

The safety in cloud services is they can suffer multiple simultaneous hardware failures, but because your data lives, simultaneously, in many places, it won’t be lost.
