Audio comes up distorted, even after safe boot or reset of NVRam, etc

As of about a week ago, the audio coming from my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) built-in speakers is heavily distorted. Audio output to headphones is totally fine. I tried the following:

  • Killing audiod: [sudo killall coreaudiod]
  • Restarting in safe mode, no report on incompatible login items, etc. However system reports no available audio outputs at all, so I could not test for any sound distortion.
  • Restart with reset of NVRam, etc, using cmd-opt-P-R keys held down when starting after shutdown.

None of these procedures seem to have addressed the problem, and I'm out of ideas here...

I even looked at the Audio MIDI setup, and saw no obvious root cause there.

Thanks for your help! I hope I don't have to only get audio through headphones going forward.

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Also, see How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD).
