I have the same band. I do not use my band in water, and remove it when I use chemical cleaners around the house.
I have had my band since the watch was launched, take good care of it and still discolored. The rep @the Apple Store told me it was “metal to metal” wear. Have seen others reporting same issue. I also have the black stainless Milanese Loop (it’s now 4 years old) and it is perfect - no signs of wear or discoloration.
I too have had my band since the Series 4 was launched and have no sign of wear or discoloration. I wear my watch every day, and as I mentioned before, I do remove it when I am doing something that might cause damage to the watch or band. I might add I always took the same precaution with my regular watches.
Update: to clarify: the band is a Gold Milanese Loop
