Keynote 9.01 video playback choppy/laggy

Since upgrading to keynote 9.01 videos in all my existing and new presentations do not play smoothly. Outside of keynote the videos play correctly and smoothly, so this seems to be a problem with keynote.

Not entirely sure what to do but need a fix because all of my presentations are extremely video heavy and they look terrible now when presenting.

I'm running Mojave 10.14.4 on

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)

Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5

I just encountered this too, fortunately on a presentation with only two videos.

Videos embedded in existing and new Keynote presentations stutter and lag when presented with Keynote 9.0.1 in full screen on my MacBook Pro (I haven't been able to test on an external monitor yet) *unless* the MBP's screen resolution is to the lowest (i.e. "Scaled">"Larger Text").

The same videos play smoothly in Keynote's Navigator view, and also play smoothly in fullscreen at any screen resolution in QuickTime Player and in Powerpoint. They also play smoothly in fullscreen at any screen resolution if I downgrade to Keynote 8.3: the problem definitely seems to be due to Keynote 9.0.

If you're backing up with Time Machine, switch off automatic updates from the Mac App Store, go to your Applications folder, use Time Machine to skip back to March and restore the older version of Keynote (8.3).

Obviously this isn't a tenable long-term solution (and is no solution at all if you're not using Time Machine) so we should also notify Apple Support directly in the hope of a quick bugfix.

If you're using Time Machine to backup your Mac:

  1. go to your Applications folder,
  2. launch Time Machine
  3. wind back to mid-March
  4. select the Keynote app
  5. click "Restore"
  6. exit Time Machine

You should now have two copies of Keynote in your Applications folder. Use "Get Info" to identify which is 8.3 and delete the other.

If you're not using Time Machine, I don't know how you're get the old file. Maybe speak to Apple Support and see if they will email you a copy?

After weeks of troubleshooting, including a trip to the Apple Store, I have pretty much determined that the problem for me is with the Keynote app - Although I am not 100% certain, I am pretty sure that the issues began around the time I updated the app. Apple finally responded to my post here and asked me to send them a sample of what is happening. I did that yesterday - sent them 2 videos in keynote slides that are very choppy - ONLY when projected. For me, everything plays fine on my iMac and on the iPad. It is only when projected through the iPad (or my phone) that there are problems. It is not the VGA adaptor I use (I have 2 of them and tried both) and it is not the projector (I teach at 2 different colleges and it happens at both places)

Seems like downgrading to Keynote 8.3 isn't the solution I thought it was.

Despite my having turned off automatic updates in the Mac App Store, my MacBook Pro's copy of Keynote 8.3 has updated itself to 9.0.1 again anyway. (Do Apple's own apps ignore the automatic updates toggle?)

As I am away from home and don't have access to my Time Machine backup, I now can't use Keynote for my presentation tomorrow. Best I can do is export the whole presentation to Powerpoint, which will still play the embedded videos.

I am not happy.

I experienced this too after updating Keynote on iOS this week. Absolute nightmare as I run my presentations off my phone and control with iPad. It was almost unwatchable and made me look like a fool.

Thankfully, they played OK on the iPad but the iPhone wouldn't "talk" to the iPad so I was unable to remote control it. Ruined my course! I tried resetting all devices, updating everything that was available to update and even cleared off all unused apps and media to create extra space "just in case".

Using iPhone 6s and iPad Air 1. Latest iOS.

Update from my visit to Apple Store - since the video problem only happens when projecting, the assistant I had thought to check my connections in the iPad - he noticed that a few of the pins were not aligned and perhaps that was the problem. Not fixable so then I started thinking, well that makes sense, but now I will have to buy a new device! Came home and checked it out with my phone - even projecting with my phone the same thing happened, so not the connection. After all the troubleshooting I have done, and reading all of these comments here I have pretty much determined it's got to be the app. The assistant also asked me if the video issue started after I updated Keynote - I couldn't be sure, but it sure seems to be in the same time area. So, PLEASE Apple - fix this bug!!!

Nope. No word at all from "the iWork team".

I'm at the point where I have several copies of Keynote 8.3 on my MBP, just in case the active program is accidentally updated to 9.0.2.

Given that the people affected are on iOS and macOS on old and new machines, this may well be more than one bug. But I would like it fixed: it's been two months now.

I received an email yesterday from "the iWork Team":

>We’re looking in to the issue reported in your feedback submission for iWork (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers). We’d like to have a better understanding about what happened, but will need more information. Is it okay for us to send a follow-up email with detailed instructions?

I said "yes" immediately, but have yet to receive the "follow-up email with detailed instructions". Hopefully today? And hopefully they'll contact you too.

In the meantime I've resigned myself to presenting without video…which isn't fun.
