Wireless Keyboard Issues

I have an Apple Smart Keyboard connected to an iMac Mini and the keyboard is acting up. Every time I try to type after several minutes of not using the Mac Mini, strange characters become appearing on the screen and it is impossible to type. I have to restart the Mac Mini all the time so the keyboard starts acting normal. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Check/replace batteries if applicable, and re-pair the keyboard with Bluetooth.
