Reset MacBook Pro to factory settings

I have a MacBook Pro (running High Sierra 10.13.6) which I must return to my former employer. I want to reset it to factory settings without deleting all shared data on iCloud from my linked devices, iPad Pro & iPhone X.

To prevent deleting any data from iCloud, log out of your iCloud account on this Mac, and then, follow the directions in the following article to reset this notebook to its factory settings:

Based on your description, it sounds like the notebook's hard drive may be corrupted.

I suggest that you try the following:

  • Power down your Mac, and then, boot up it up in Recovery Mode by immediately holding down the <command><R> keys after pressing the power button. Keep holding them down until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release both keys.
  • When at the initial Recovery Mode screen, select the Disk Utility option.
  • Run Disk Utility > First Aid

Okay, I’ve backed up what I want to keep, turned off and logged out of everything the various articles have advised. I have tried to erase the disk following the steps listed in the Apple Support article ‘How to erase a disk for Mac” but continue to get “erase process has failed” message. Details: “unmounting disk - couldn’t open device - operation failed”. Must be missing something but unable to figure out what it may be. Any further assistance would be very much appreciated. I’d prefer not to have to take this in to a service center to get it sorted out.
