The bass on my HomePods is overpowering

I've got a pair of HomePods, setup as a stereo device, but I find the bass simply overpowering. I spoke to Apple support and was told that there is no option to reduce the bass, e.g. with the Equaliser.

Are there any possibilities to reduce the bass, any kind of work around? I'd appreciate any suggestion, thanks

If you’re airplaying from your iOS device, you can try to adjust the device’s settings in Settings - Music - Playback - EQ

you can also try moving them , lift in the air off the surface for a few seconds to recalibrate. They are designed to adjust to the area they are in. It can take a few minutes to adjust

Try another type of surface. Solid wood gives a deeper bass

it also depends on the song. An Artist like Drake for example, is bass heavy. Whereas older music isn’t.

I spoke to Apple again and was told that it works with the EQ settings on an OS device, but not anymore from a Computer.

I've just tried it with 'Bass reducer' and it seems to work, but I really miss the possibility to create my own Equaliser settings. It's a mystery to me why Apple took this decision considering the low sales of their 'HomePod'....

Hello again,

I think it used to work as it is mentioned in a lot of articles, but Apple disabled it with the introduction of AirPlay 2 which I find very disappointing. It is actually standard to have the possibility on an audio device to change the quality of the output.

Apple seems to think that with their automatic analysing of the room they offer the best possible sound and don't want that the user is able to can change it. That what I was told also yesterday on the phone.

It's kind of disappointing, I am probably returning the speakers and chose another brand where it is possible.

We live in a flat with neighbours around and the bass is just too loud, what a bummer, I would have loved to like the HomePods but don't due to this silly reason.

Well thanks anyhow for your fab help and trying it even out yourself!

They only got 4% of the market share, hence the drop, that's also why I bought them. It definitely does work with iOS, the only problem is that you can't create any custom presets like with the normal iTunes EQ. I've download a third party app where you can create your own presets, and it sounds way better than anything that Apple has to offer. Lower the bass, up the mids and highs a bit, amazing. Maybe raise it as an improvement suggestion at their feedback site too, that's what I did.....

Thx so much again and all the best from London, have a lovely week!!

I've tried it a few times already, it would be the logical step. It works fine when listening on the laptop, but whenever I switch over the HomePod it has absolutely no effect. I spoke to support earlier on and was told that I cannot change the audio output from the HomePod through the equaliser or anything else. I find this very strange..... please see attached picture.... and thx for trying to help out!

I’m lucky I don’t need to worry about the neighbours. I’m in a house and went outside to check and I can’t even hear them. Homes are more spread out in Canada.

The echo is a better virtual assistant but the sound isn’t good, not sure about google home. The HomePods seem to get better reviews for sound quality. Overall I’m pleased with them (I have 3) except the Homekit could improve.

Have a lovely week :)

Yeah, I tried that myself after I posted . It does nothing. Tested my phone... nothing.

That article I posted said it does. Maybe they’re hard of hearing!

you would think they add this feature. The only workaround is on another surface or area. It’s the only way to change the sound, but like you said in a small space you’ve not got other options. They say room corners increase the bass.

It’s a common complaint about them.

80’s pop like Duran Duran isn’t bass heavy at all. .

Queen Another One Bites The Dust is heavy bass, but that song was supposed to sound that way,

Seems to depend on the genre or era. Today’s music just has more bass.
