iOS12.2.2 won't let me sync my photos - it goes on infinite loop!

Ever since I updated my iPhone 8 Plus to the latest iOS 12.2.2, I'm having trouble syncing my photos from the MacBook Pro to the phone. Typically, I have a folder of all the photos I want (which contains up to 40K photos) and have them link to iTunes using the Sync Photos section. I would then hook my iPhone up, sync it and it'd update all the new photos and done.

However, this time when I sync it, the message on iTunes would read "Reading Photos to [Phone]," which is what normally happens only this time, it goes on and on and on. It never stops! I once left it sync overnight and it's still not done. I then try it like 3 more times and the results remain the same.

This occurrence has happened to me before but never like this. When it doesn't sync/update my photos, a couple of things I'd do:

  • Delete the "iPod Photo Cache" and retry
  • Switch to iCloud Photo and revert back to manual syncing
  • Reformat my iPhone
  • Update my Mac and iPhone to the latest OS

I've done these steps many times and I still get the same error. When I reformat my phone, it does sync all 40,000 photos from scratch but when I add new photos, it won't update. Also, when I try to switch to iCloud Photos, I get an error message that says," iCloud Photos Could Not Be Turned On. Try Again Later."

Is it just me or anyone else is facing this problem too? I seriously believe the new iOS is causing this bug. Any suggestion? Feel free to comment. The hardware & software I'm using are:

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017
  • 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 with 16GB RAM 2133 MHz LPDDR3
  • macOS Mojave v10.14.4
  • iPhone 8 Plus - iOS 12.2.2 & 256GB

I hope my explanation makes sense.

I have found a way to do it but it takes HOURS for just 5000 photos over 15 folders.

First, you remove all photos on the iPhone/iPad by untick the "Sync Photos" box and choose remove not keep.

Then you sync the device before quit iTunes and unplug your device.

Start iTunes again, plug it in and go to photos on the sync page, select a folder instead of sync all. Do it 1 by 1, and remember to unplug your device after each time you successfully sync a folder.

I know this is extremely ridiculous but until Apple releases an update for this we just have to do it this way. This method took me hours to realise you can still do it but only do it at a very small amount (of photos).

The currently released version of iOS is iOS 12.2.

Unreleased versions of iOS software are used at your own risk, and the consequences cannot be discussed here.

You mentioned the same version both in your post’s title and body, so I believe you did not just make a typo.

My iPhone 8 Plus is definitely legit so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem but software related.

I did the unthinkable on the weekend: I restarted my iPhone without iCloud restore thinking it'd help to start from scratch but surprise surprise, it didn't do anything. :(

However, I do notice that whenever I want to turn on iCloud Photos, I keep getting the message that reads, "iCloud Photos Could Not Be Turned On. Try Again Later."

Do you think this could be the problem?

After weeks of trial and error, I've finally found the perfect solution and that is to use the Files app from Apple. This means that all my pictures will be stored in iCloud and I'm no longer using my hard drive.

The Files app is not as user friendly as the default Photos app but it's now hassle free. Please look through the latter more closely Apple because the syncing procedure is completely broken.

I thank everyone for your time to reply. Some are helpful, some not so helpful at all but either way, cheers!
