My default Apple ID email address will be invalid soon. I wanted to change the email address to my gmail address, which already appears as my other (2nd) backup address for my profile but this is impossible....
whenever I try to set my gmail address as the primary address, instead of the other address, I am told that this address already exists, therefor it can not be set as a “new” address.
how can I do it?
If your e-mail address was associated with an ID in any way, for example as a Reachable at or Rescue e-mail address, then it can't be reused with another Apple ID for approximately one year. I have also seen posts that stated Apple told them there was a 30 day waiting period before the address could be used again. You will need to get another e-mail address to use as your Apple ID or you can try waiting 30 days to see if that works.

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
My rescue/reachable (other) address, the one one I wish to change to be my apple ID now, was set years ago. Still, I can not turn it to be my apple ID instead of the one that will no longer exist soon.....
Does it mean I have to issue a completely new email account, with an address I have never registered before?

You are welcome. A new address would probably be the fastest way to make a name change on your Apple ID. You could remove the desired address from the ID, but you would have to wait at least 30 days or longer to use the removed address as your Apple ID.
