Safari and new yorker.com overheats MacBook

The website newyorker.com (to which I subscribe) causes my computer to overheat. This seems recent change. The "Energy impact" reported by Activity Monitor exceeds 100 for this website, without videos playing. When a tab is open to this site the machine becomes too warm to rest on my lap. Any ideas for better understanding and mitigating this problem?
