(Left and right) shift key stops working with function keys recently. Shift works well with A,B,...,Z to capitalize the letters; shift works well with "Command", "Option" and "Control". However, it won't work with function keys -- Pressing "Shift + F6" is identical to pressing "F6" both effectively and visually via a key casting software. Apparently this is not a hardware problem. What could be a fix for it? Thanks in advance

FWIW, to get the alternative functions you press "fn" plus what ever function key you are using. The shift key does nothing with the Function keys.
If you are using a third party app then you need to ask them.

Not sure what "key casting software" is, but if you open the keyboard viewer, does it indicate that you are pressing shift-F6, like this? [Note: mine is showing also the Fn key, since I have the usual setting of using F1, F2 etc,as special keys like brightness, volume and all that, so function keys per se require holding down Fn]
What are you expecting from shift+F6 for example?

Thanks for your reply. I ticked the option in System Preference to always show function key. Besides I'm using mbp with touch bar so it's really easy to tell whether I'm pressing F1,...F12 key or adjusting brightness or else.
Thanks for your reply. Yes. But I don't think it's that app to blame, since even key casting software implies I was not pressing Shift even when I was.
