I did an auto software update, computer is now updated but it takes 1min to load when turned on, and turns off when unplugged. Power cord light is orange not green and battery life has remained at 76% so it's clearly not charging.

You can Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
for battery management.
Hold the option key and click the battery icom in the upper right menu bar, what does it say for battery condition?
Any thing but Condition: Normal the battery needs to be replaced.

Ah thank you, yes I tried the SMC already. Your tip option + battery icon = replace battery now... weird it's only 6 years old
macbook pro turns off when not plugged in
