AppleCare + with Theft and Loss

Hello, I bought an iPhone XS Max in Brazil, the same month on a trip, I saw on the AppleCare + plan, it interested me enough, because it is an expensive gadjet, more so by the plan of loss and theft.

This month, unfortunately I had my iPhone stolen, so I decided to use the AppleCare + plan, to my surprise, I was informed that the plan does not cover these cases of theft in Brazil.

So I got in touch with Apple Americana to try to get an iPhone delivered to a friend's house, and again I had terrible news, I was informed that the plan could not be triggered because my iPhone was Brazilian, and Apple Americana could not give this support.

In the end, I lost my iPhone and the first time I tried to use the AppleCare + plan I was not successful.

Yes, the iPhone warranty, and AppleCare+ are specific to the country the phone was originally purchased in. AppleCare+ with loss and theft in the USA has the theft portion covered by a partner, Assurant Insurance Co. Insurance is a regulated industry and Assurant is not licensed to provide coverage anywhere but the USA (and Apple itself is not an insurance company at all).

See https://www.apple.com/support/products/iphone.html.

From what I see on the Apple Brazil web site, there is no “AppleCare+ With theft and loss” available in Brazil. So if you have AppleCare+ (which is not the same as “AppleCare+ with theft and loss”), then it does not include any coverage for lost or stolen devices.

But your phone was purchased new from Apple or an Authorized seller in Brazil? And if you live in Brazil, how did you complete the purchase, since you had to have provided a USA street address, telephone number and pass a USA credit check (by Assurant) to complete the AppleCare+ with theft and loss purchase and registration?

The AppleCare purchase and registration process would also have confirmed your phone’s serial number, and should then not have allowed a Brazil iPhone to be used?

The general terms of AppleCare+ with theft and loss state that (https://assurantdeviceclaim.com/InsuranceDocuments):

”(iv) This Plan will be offered and valid only in the fifty states of the United States of America and the District of Columbia. Persons who have not reached the age of majority may not purchase this Plan. This Plan may not be available in all states, and is not available where prohibited by law.”

So the system should never have allowed your purchase to proceed with a serial number for a device not originally sold by Apple or an authorized seller in the USA. So you definitely need to reach out to Apple directly to see about getting your payments to date refunded and the plan cancelled.
