I'm upgrading a late '14 MBP w/ a 1TB Samsung/Apple SSD... Recovery OS wont allow me to format it... help. :)

As I can recall when I purchased a SSD to my MacBook Pro I had to format the drive in an external case and then mount it in the computer. Mounted in the computer I could not format the SSD. Maybe that could be the reason for you as well?

The guy? Was this at a Apple Store or AASP?

It is new or used SSD?

External enclosure or internally installed?

If it is internal, try Recover (command R), or a USBinstaller or boot off a Time Machine ** (option key) and use the Disk Utility there.

Can you mount the drive in DiskUtility? How is it formatted now?

DiskUtility>View>Show All Devices you erase/partition/format the parent drive.

Are youisure you are trying to format it at the device level rather than at the volume level?

I can't mount it in disk utility - sometimes it shows in disk utility -accessed via recovery- sometimes not. My son suggested trying to format it in Terminal.

Sorry- I didn't answer one of your questions- it is internally installed - as I don't have the correct external enclosure- which might be part of the problem.

I do have Time Machine **- I'll try that.
