line in recording?

Hello, I have just bought a new MacBook Pro.

I used to record audio with using the mini jack input, close to the headphone jack plug in my old Mac.

I now learn that the new one has one mini jack port.

I cannot find the way to select the mini jack port as "line in" recording.

I used to record audio with logic, straight into the Mac from my phono pre-amp.

The best I could do so far was to have the input "seen" only as external microphone with the signal arriving so low, even with the volume at the max.

Am I doing something wrong or the new Mac does not allow to record audio simply plugging the jack in?

Thanks

Not 100% sure but the older stereo line in seems to be discontinued on the new MBP's. Even if you did get a signal in I think it's probably mono, like the Mic that comes on a headset. You will now need an audio interface of some kind. I'm sticking with my older machines which are just now becoming obsolete, not able to run Mojave.

I can't tell you why but can tell you it's Apple's modus operandi. Starting with iPhone 8 headphone jacks were discontinued, they discontinued optical drives in their computers before anyone else, the ports (USB, Thunderbolt) change almost every other year, sometimes not for the better. It drives development in related industries and in the end, helps Apple sell more computers. Reducing options also gives apple more $$$ to put into development/adoption of new technologies.
