Video sent to me via iMessage: Low quality on my iPhone but HD on my iPad (same video)

Recently when one of my contacts sends me videos from their iPhone via iMessage, those videos are low quality when I view them on my iPhone XS yet are HD when I view those exact same videos (via the same iMessage) on my iPad Mini 4 (both are on iOS 12.2).

I don't know of a setting on my end that would change the resolution of videos that I receive via iMessage; does anyone have thoughts on why this is happening? thx!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having an issue viewing a video that’s sent to you via iMessage. Thanks for providing the information that both devices are running iOS 12.2. Nice job keeping the iOS up-to-date.

Take a look on your iPhone under Settings > Messages > scroll to the bottom to Low Quality Image Mode. This is typically turned off. Is there any change when you restart your iPhone XS with these steps: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Also, are the videos playing in Messages, or through another app? This information will help begin to isolate the issue further to be able to provide you with the best assistance.

Thanks for the reply! However, the Low Quality Image Mode setting would be for images I send, not those I receive. And, I'm not sure it would apply to videos, regardless. It's possible the contact sending me the videos via iMessage has that setting enabled, but as I receive the videos on my iPad via iMessage in high quality yet those same videos are received in low quality on my iPhone, that also would seem to not be the case. I'm seeing them in low quality both when playing in iMessage as well as when I save them to and play them from the Photos app. I've restarted my phone, but as that contact hasn't sent me any videos recently, I'm not sure if that's helped.
