Buying iphone directly from apple.

Hello,

I was wondering if phones bought directly from apple are "unlocked." I am looking to upgrade from an iPhone 6s to a Xs Max, and am wondering if i can directly take the micro sim from my 6s and transfer it to the new phone and be good to go? I am on the Telus network month-to-month right now, with no contract. But I would like the option to switch carriers at any time, or use other micro sim cards when in other countries.
