I love VLC too. But in Photos for Mac is an easy way to save still frames. You can save a selected frame as a TIFF file in your Pictures folder. View the video enlarged, bring up the video controls and advance to the frame you want. Click the gears icon to show the menu: Then click "Export Frame to Pictures".
