i recently bought the iphone xr but i can't seem to put two nano-sim cards into it, i can only put one

12 Pro sim tray does NOT accept two nano sims. How do I use it with two physical sims? Apple support states and illustrates how two nano SIM cards can be placed on the sim tray. Alas, my iPhone 12 Pro tray has no slot at the back to place a second nano SIM card. Has anyone else had this issue? How was it resolved? Thanks

That's correct. Only devices sold in Hong Kong and mainland China support 2 physical SIM cards. All others support 1 physical SIM and a built in e-SIM.
