caps lock key not working - all else works great

My caps lock key will not work. It is not the fault of the keyboard because it works on my other computer. (Mac mini) It was working yesterday. I may have made a change to the firmware. Help?

Mac mini, macOS 10.12

Reset the SMC and NVRAM, and also check the Caps Lock setting in  > System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard > Modifier Keys... setting, and also remove any add-on apps that intercept or that modify the keyboard settings. If you're not sure if you have one of those apps installed, boot into Safe Mode and try the key there.

Thanks for your response. Now my Mac mini does not recognize any keyboard and no keyboard shows up in system preferences. HELP?

I'll assume SMC and NVRAM have already been reset, and that didn't resolve the problem here.

Okay, so which keyboard vendor and model?

Are you using a Bluetooth keyboard, or a wired USB keyboard? Or some other less-common keyboard connection?

If this is a Bluetooth keyboard, first confirm that the keyboard is charged, and is powered up, and working. If the keyboard has power and is indicating readiness, and is not working with your Mac mini, then connect a wired keyboard and go through the Bluetooth setup sequence using that keyboard. > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Enable Bluetooth if it's not already enabled, and associate the Bluetooth keyboard if it's not already associated. (Bluetooth setup.) If that doesn't work, try a different Bluetooth keyboard, and try the initial Bluetooth keyboard on a different computer; see if it's the computer or the keyboard.

If this is a wired USB keyboard, try a different wired keyboard, and try the initial wired keyboard on a different computer. Again, see if this is the computer or the keyboard.

If this is some other keyboard connection—some third-party keyboards have their own wireless connection schemes, for instance—which keyboard vendor and which model?

If there are third-party add-on anti-virus or anti-malware apps installed, or if there are add-on cleaner apps installed, or add-on network-monitoring-and-network-firewall apps here, or apps that intercept keyboard input, boot into Safe Mode and test with this keyboard again.

Reply to Mr. Hoffman: I was using the old standard apple keyboard with Griffth adapter that is so hard to find now, so I thought it was the adapter (it was not) then I thought it must be the keyboard (both quite old) but it is the fault of the mac mini. I have had it less than a year but I got it refurbished and it seems to be okay.

I tried to reset the SMC and NVRAM as you suggested but I did not notice anything changing but that might be what corrected the problem because now all is back to normal except that I still do not see the keyboard icon in with the others in my system preferences.

Much thanks for your help and now I will know where to go if I get into trouble again. Now if you could only tell me where to download some solitaire card games (free of course) for the Mac. I will be eternally grateful.
