.mov just sound no video showing

My drive space was full on my iPhone, so transferred files to my hard drive. However, great % of these files are showing a default pic of the file, not an actual clip of what the video might contain. And, when played it only provides the sound and no video. I've tried opening these with QuickTime and other sources, but just sound. Are all of these family videos corrupted?

iPhone 8, iOS 12

How did you transfer the video files?

Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

These are probably HEVC (H.265 video codec) movie files.

  • You would need a HEVC capable video player (e.g. VLC).
  • Or you can convert the file.
  • You can set your iPhone to record in AVC (H.264) “Most Compatible” for new videos, to avoid this issue next time. Settings﹥Camera﹥Formats﹥Most Compatible ✓.
  • You can set your iPhone to export in AVC (H.264) “Automatic” for existing videos, to convert on export. Settings﹥Photos﹥Transfer to Mac or PC﹥Automatic ✓. (Not just for photos; for videos too.)
