Cannot play .mov file

I moved several videos I had recorded on my iPhoneX to a flash drive to make room on my phone. I then took the flash drive and uploaded those videos to my iMac. One particular video was 30 minutes long and for whatever reason ended up with the .mov extension instead of .mp4. I have tried to open this video in QuickTime but it will not work. Any idea how I can view my video or why this happened?

Can you verify that the copying went well? What is the file size on flash drive? E.g. a 0KB file wouldn’t play in any player, as there is no information in an empty file.

Try playing the file in any other player (e.g. VLC, IINA). If they also won’t play the file, then that strengthens the belief that the file itself is invalid.

Try getting media information on the file from VideoSpec or MediaInfo. It this succeeds, it will be enlightening at least. If it fails, then that strengthens the belief that the file itself is invalid.

That is the information I am looking for, but I had hoped that it would say much more.

“IsTruncated : Yes” would be an indication that the file does not have the expected size; e.g. if it is not complete. That would usually be enough for the tool to give up and not seek further.

I’m sorry to inform you, that I think that this copy of the video is not salvageable.

Is this with the old QuickTime Player 7 or the current QuickTime Player 10? If the former, then try the latter.

What does QuickTime Player 10 say when you try to open this file? The exact message might be relevant to resolving this issue.

Is this iMac, where you are loading this file, running on High Sierra 10.13? macOS Sierra 10.12 might have problems with some video formats that the iPhone might produce. Using HEVC (H.265) media on Apple devices - Apple Support
