can't open a .mov file in QuickTime Player

Have a brand new iMac, using macOS 10.15.6, and on my iPhone 11 MaxPro everything is up to date. But I took 3 short videos on my iPhone, uploaded it to my Mac via Air Drop, but when I click on it in my Mac, it says the file "isn't compatible with QuickTime Player." How can that be?

Thanks for getting back to us with that information, craigst2. It's helpful.

QuickTime will not open .mov video -- Have a look at Jon Walker's reply to another user having the same issue. Check under the "More Info" tab to see what codecs are being used. You may need another application in order to play the movies you've recorded on your iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices -- If you'd like to keep the camera from recording with either format, you can take photos and videos using older formats. Scroll down to "Capturing this media" for the information. There's also great information under "Working with this media" if you wish to continue to use HEIF or HEVC.

Let us know what you discover when you can.

Cheers!

Greetings, craigst2.

It appears that you're unable to play a video you recorded on your iPhone 11 Pro Max after using AirDrop to your iMac on macOS Catalina. You get a message that the file isn't compatible, and we're glad to help with this.

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices -- When you check the format of the video, you may have recorded it using High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). If that’s the case, you’ll need to convert the video.

If an audio or video file doesn't play on Mac -- If the format of the video file is correct, the steps in this article can help.

Let us know how that goes.

Take care.
