MacBook Pro replacement screen Mid-2014

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro Model A1502 that the screen is broken (Pics below). I wanted use it as a desktop computer by connecting the HDMI cord, but for some reason it doesn't work. I took it to the Apple store and they connected a Thunderbolt or some sort of DisplayPort for the HDMI and didn't work. They explained to me that there is a setting that needs to be changed in order for the HDMI to mirror the screen on a TV. Problem is I cannot see the screen whatsoever so therefore I can't change the setting. They told me the only to fix the problem is to buy a new screen.

My question is what can I do in order to resolve this issue? Also, if I were to buy a new screen which one can it be? I am just looking to resolve the issue without wasting so much money. Do I need a specific kind of screen or can I get one without retina display for way cheaper?

Thank you!!

I think you need to replace specific display assembly which could get at eBay or Ifixit.
