Folders turned into Unix Executable File on my SDCard

I was just on vacation and took a ton of pictures. Using a card reader adapter USB dongle, I inserted the device into my Thunderbolt display connected to my Mac Mini. After finding the new device (and labelling it NO NAME), it immediately disappeared and ejected it. It reappeared, and I was able to navigate to the Folder that had my pictures to be able to copy them to my hard drive. I never got started with the process before it again disappeared (and I got the error again that it was not ejected properly). I removed and reinserted from the USB port, and now that one subfolder is a Unix Executable file. The Card Reader constantly finds and ejects repeatedly, so I cannot get very far in troubleshooting before it re-ejects it. I then took the same reader and put it into my Macbook Air, and the root folder DCIM is now also a Unix file and cannot navigate therefore into subfolders. The Macbook Air keeps the connection to the reader persistently. I am using OSX Mojave on both devices, so since the connection is persistent on my MB Air, thats what I will use to try to resolve this issue. I searched the forums and I didn't see any resolution to this issue. PLEASE help me retrieve all my pictures from vacation!!!!

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

You should perform a bit for bit clone of the SD card to a raw image file. Then copy the raw image file so you work from the copy to prevent any further damage to the SD card until the issue is resolved. Plus making another copy allows you to start fresh if you make a mistake with any recovery tools. It also allows you to send the SD card to a professional data recovery service such as Drive Savers or Kroll Ontrack. Both of these provide free estimates and it may not cost as much as you think. Plus they are both recommended by major OEMs including Apple.

I would suggest using GNU ddrescue to clone the SD card just in case the SD card is failing, but you could try using "dd" on the command line if the SD card is not producing errors. You can then mount the raw image and use the normal Apple filesystem tools to repair the filesystem on the raw image file. (Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, etc.)

TestDisk is a free multi-platform command line tool which can sometimes "fix" or get past filesystem corruption to copy files, but I'm not sure it will run on HS or Mojave. You could try this tool on the raw image file.

Tip: You should always work from a copy and not the original.
