Cannot start the source application for this object

Hmmm, can you drag the PDF to Preview's icon & drop it? If so, what happens?

Does sound like some special Windows only thing.

Might try a Windows® VM in VirtualBox...

See if you can do a Get info on the embedded PDF, see what open with says, or right click on it ^ choose a different App to open it with.
