How do i destroy my old Mac Pro 2010 hard drive?

My Mac Pro 2010 computer died. Nine years is a long time!

Thankfully, everything was backed up on a removable drive through Time Machine!

So, I removed the old hard drive from the old Mac Pro 2010 computer since it won't even boot up anymore. I pulled it out easily, however, I cannot open the case that it is in so that I can break it with a hammer or something.

Does anyone know how to destroy the hard drive? I do not want to hand this over to a recycling company since all of my sensitive data may still be readable.

Thanks in advance!

Wendy

If you do not have the tools to remove the metal plate on top, a few blows with an ordinary hammer will solve the problem.

The tolerances inside a rotating magnetic drive make a speck of dust or a human hair look like a gigantic boulder by comparison.

All to have to do to make it unreadable is make a good sized dent the top plate. Then the platters can not spin, and the drive is dead to normal recovery methods. Anything more and it can NEVER be recovered by any means.

What makes you think your Mac Pro has died, it is just a collection of different parts that can be replaced often for not very much money. Perhaps you could give us an indication of what went wrong and we might be able to guide you on how to fix it.

My MacPro is from 2008 and is still going strong, the only thing that has gone wrong with it was the original graphics card gave up, and that is an easily replaceable item.

If your MacPro is beyond repair then take the drive out place it in a hard drive enclosure if you have one or can borrow or buy one, connect it to another Mac and use Disk Utility to Erase it, select the level of security you want. Depending on the level you choose and the size of the disk this could take hours, many many hours.

Any mechanically minded person who does not like modern technologies

would probably be glad to help you physically destroy your Mac hard drive.

Then anyone with a desire to use the Mac as a computer, can get new HDD.

Someone with an 'oxy-acetylene torch' or 'plasma torch' could make short

work ~ to fuse the metal into an unworkable glob. A good friend of mine

has several industrial tools that mash, bake, melt, grind, et. most things well.

The internal platters or rotational magnetic parts inside case, are part of the

read-write mechanism, could be physically broken. -- Know anyone with a

vintage power "trip hammer?" Or just a workbench vise and an 10-lb sledge.

Need not be all that industrial, though the effort should be thorough.

I've had several dozen Macs older than your comparatively new 2010 Mac tower.

Still using some, and fixed up and gave the others away. 😊
