Mail App Notifications (macOS Mojave)

On macOS Mojave, I'm having some weird glitches with the notifications in my mail app. Whenever I get an email, I get the red dot on top of the app telling me I have a new message. However, the actual notification in the top right of my display seems to only work randomly, and it's frustrating to have to open the app to see who the email is from when I'm working on something else. Any help would be appreciated.
