Portrait Mode won't open on Selfie Camera?

Hi all,

I have an approximately 1 year old iPhone X running 12.2. I've just noticed that Portrait Mode won't open using the Selfie cam, at all. Portrait Mode works completely fine using the forward facing camera, it's just that whenever I try to open Selfie Portrait Mode the picture becomes completely blurred like it does when you've just opened the app and waiting for it to load, except it doesn't go away (See picture below). I've tried closing the app and restarting my phone, and changing just about all the settings in the camera app itself, so I'm at a loss. I wonder if it's a hardware issue, but I've always taken very good care of my phone and used a tempered glass screen protector and a thick otterbox case and there's absolutely no external damage on the device whatsoever and no water damage, either. It previously worked just fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions about a potential fix, or is this likely to be a hardware issue, in which case I need to think about replacing it?

Thanks!

It sounds to me like your screen protector is very likely the issue - it's too bad you felt the necessity of using one with such an amazing camera and display.

Force restart the iPhone as follows:

  • Briefly press the volume up button and release
  • Briefly press the volume down button and release
  • Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears

If that doesn't solve it, visit an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center (or permanently remove the screen protector).

First, try a Forced Restart.

If that doesn't work you could try "Reset All Settings" by going to Settings>General>Reset, you will not loose any data or content but will have some configuring to do afterwards and signing back in to wifi networks etc.

You say it was working fine, can you remember when the issue was first noticed and did it follow an update, if so you could try a Restore via iTunes, after which use a BackUp to get the device configured to how it was previously. Note the BackUp could reintroduce the issue again so in that case Restore as New.

If you don't have access to iTunes then a visit to the Apple Store will be required (they should be able to Restore the device for you), in any case you will need to see them if it's hardware related anyway (and the Restore doesn't work) so book a Genius appointment either way would be my suggestion.

Note you could try "Erase All Content and Settings" from the same Reset location on the device but I'm guessing if it's connected with a software update you will need to replace that software (ie the complete iOS), only an iTunes Restore can do that.
