File sharing permissions problems

Hi There,

I share folders from several external TB2 HDs with one other user over ethernet.

But whenever the other person creates, edits or copies files within the shared folders, I don't have access to them unless I enter my admin password. However, the other person has no issue with files I create or edit.

I've checked permissions and tried propagating them several times but no luck.

Attached are screenshots of the File Sharing setup, a couple of things to note:

  • The shared volumes have -1 after their names, how do I fix/change this (the volumes don't)?
  • Both computers are running 10.14.4.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The first part, yes.

I don't think you need inheritance, but you do need to apply it recursively (-R). You do need the file_inherit and directory_inherit directives.

You don't need to do anything for the other user except put them in the group that you are giving permissions to. Even though your user has access, you still need to be in the group to allow you to edit their files.

You need to set up ACLs on the folders you share to allow everyone to edit other people's files.

You'll need to create a group (or groups) for all the users who need access to each folder. Use the Terminal commands on that page (modifying with group name) to apply the ACLs to the shared folders.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated. Just to clarify a few things, basically...

  • I need a group that contains both users
  • And that group needs to be applied to shared folders via ACLs

Does that sound right so far?

After reading the link, I have a few questions about doing it in Terminal...

  • Do I want to apply the ACLs marked as inherited or not inherited?
  • What index should I use?

Obviously my user (being the computer admin) is applied to every folder but do I apply the other user specifically or just let the ACL group handle permission for the second user?

Thanks for the help so far, very much appreciated.

Cheers
